Buster Levi Gallery is pleased to present More Notes to Lou, new work by Martee Levi at 121 Main Street in Cold Spring, New York. The exhibition will run from June 7 through June 30, 2019. The opening for the show will be on Friday June 7, 2019 from 6-8:30 pm.
The paintings in More Notes to Lou continue Levi’s investigation into the compositional relationship between geometry and rhythm. They are vibrant paintings dominated by warm colors and energetic brushwork. The edges between the shapes vary from harder clean edges to softer ones that mingle and overlap each other. Some retain the ground color a characteristic of Levi’s collage paintings in her previous show and others before that. The paintings are clearly based on a grid that Levi freely uses to improvise her compositional ideas. In some paintings it is obvious and in others the structural lines get buried under the colors depending on their density and value. Compositions are explored in seemingly infinitely subtle variations all structured on a dominant vertical horizontal opposition with occasional diagonals added to enliven the rhythm. These paintings are aggressive in a positive manner. They reach out to the viewer and invite them to participate in their dynamic energy.
Buster Levi Gallery is open Friday through Sunday from 12-6 pm.
