Buster Levi Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition, Distopia by Maria Pia Marrella, opening July 7 through July 30, 2017. A reception for the artist will be held Friday, July 7th from 5 to 8 pm.
The exhibition will be the 13th solo show for Ms. Marrella, who is a member of the
Buster Levi Gallery in Cold Spring,
New York since its inception in 2013.
The singer and activist Nina Simone once said, “An artist’s duty is to reflect the times,”
and in the new work shown at BLG, political events and cultural discord is evident in Marrella’s paintings. The style and content of these pieces are a departure from the artist’s past works but Marrella’s familiarity with illustration serves her well messaging immigration, racial turmoil, terrorism and the 2016 election with iconic American images.
The short documentary film by Leah Galant,
“Putting the Fire Out”, will provide insight into the formation of these paintings.
