Grace Kennedy, Doorway, 2025, mixed media on panel, 12x12”

Colorforms are part of a series of multi-media paintings that involve people within cramped spaces. The mood of these works is eerie, restless; a familiar space that is not quite comfortable. The interactions between people and their surroundings are also somewhat inexplicable. One is not certain as to exactly what is happening or why they are where they are. For example; in Doorway 2025, two adults and a child are within a hall or room near a door. A huge red ball or balloon is blocking the entrance. Neither of the adults look at each other or at the ball. The child looks at one of the adults. The walls and floor are painted in logical local colors, however the wall behind the child is nearly the same red as the ball. The viewing angle is from above and is disorienting. There is a definite sense of disquiet in the painting and there is little hint as to what is going on.

The influence on this series of Kennedy’s work is derived more from film or photography than the history of painting. The films of David Lynch in particular come to mind. Kennedy does not replicate his imagery, such as Lynch’s fantasy of suburbia, but she certainly captures his surreal vision of everyday surroundings. Kennedy has described them as “stage sets” where she inserts collaged or painted figures. The figures themselves can be severely cropped which helps accentuate the impression that the viewer has unexpectedly come upon some drama. Additionally her fluid use of paint often softens borders creating a foggy like atmosphere that makes the perception of the imagery more difficult. In describing the works in this exhibit Kennedy states; “The works act as visual Exquisite Corpse, since each found addition impacts the next and adds to the general sense of disquietude.
